In 2026, the South African Police Service (SAPS) began a large effort to hire new security personnel, with many Security Officer jobs available throughout South Africa, providing an excellent starting point for young individuals keen on working in public service and ensuring national security.

What SAPS Security Jobs Are Available?

  1. National Security Officer Posts (75 vacancies)

These positions are part of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) and are based at head office and provincial offices across South Africa.

There are 75 permanent security posts at Salary Level 03 with a starting salary of R163,680 per year.

Earlier recruitment drives also listed smaller sets of security officer vacancies (e.g., 16 and 29 posts) spread across SAPS Academy locations and Supply Chain/Depot sites. 

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for SAPS Security Officer positions, applicants must:

  • To qualify, you must be a citizen of South Africa.
  • You need to speak at least two official languages, with English being one of them.
  • You must not have any past or current criminal charges and must pass a security check, including fingerprinting.
  • You need to have finished at least Grade 10 (Standard 8) or NQF Level 3.
  • Registration with PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) is required.
  • You should possess a Grade C Security Certificate or higher.
  • You cannot have been deemed unable to own a firearm.
  • You must be prepared to complete and keep up-to-date with firearm training.
  • Finally, you need to be available to work rotating shifts and long hours.

What You’ll Do as a SAPS Security Officer

If appointed, your duties may include:

  • Managing access control and verifying ID at police premises
  • Registering, searching, and authorising visitors and employees
  • Guarding facilities, equipment, and vehicles
  • Patrolling buildings and perimeters
  • Monitoring security equipment and reporting incidents
  • Keeping visitor records and security logs
  • Supporting broader SAPS operational needs in line with legislation
